Musical equipment is a vital component in the creation of unique sounds and styles for musicians. Each instrument, pedal, and amplifier contribute to the overall sound of a band, and every musician has their personal preferences. In this blog, we will delve into the musical equipment used by the members of the band, including Don Ortiz on lead guitar, Mark Peotter on bass, Kenny Skaggs on pedal steel, and Henry Lara on drums.

Don Ortiz, the lead guitarist, uses a Fender Ultra Stratocaster guitar, which is one of the most iconic instruments in music history. This guitar features a sleek and comfortable neck, a contoured body, and versatile GK-3 pickups that allow for easy integration with guitar synthesizers like the Roland GR-1. The Roland GR-1 synthesizer is a powerful tool for creating unique and complex sounds, from lush pads and atmospheric textures to gritty lead sounds and funky basslines. Ortiz also utilizes the Fractal FM3 and Fractal FC6 pedals, which enable him to shape the sound of his guitar in countless ways. These multi-effects processors simulate a range of amplifiers, pedals, and cabinets and creates complex signal chains that allow the musician to layer multiple effects and create unique sounds. Ortiz also uses the expression pedal to adjust parameters such as volume, pitch, and modulation, resulting in dynamic and expressive performances.

Mark Peotter, the bassist, uses an Ibanez 505 Electric Bass with five strings, known for its rich, full-bodied sound. He pairs this with a Tech 21 SansAmp Bass Driver DI pedal, which allows him to shape the tone of the bass in various ways by simulating a range of amplifiers and speaker cabinets. Peotter’s SansAmp Bass Driver DI pedal has a unique serial number, 653801, that distinguishes it from other pedals of the same model.

Kenny Skaggs is the band’s pedal steel guitarist, and he plays a Carter single-neck 10-string pedal steel guitar, known for its smooth and expressive sound. To keep his guitar safe during transport, Skaggs uses an SKB flight case. He amplifies his guitar through a Quilter Tone Block 202 amp head, a lightweight and compact amplifier that delivers a powerful and transparent tone. To keep his guitar in tune, he uses a Peterson Stroboscopic Flip tuner, known for its accuracy and ease of use. Skaggs also incorporates a DigiTech Chorus pedal into his setup to add depth and dimension to his sound. Finally, he uses a Hilton Electronics volume pedal to control the level of his sound, allowing him to create lively and dramatic performances.

Henry Lara, the drummer, has a versatile setup that he can customize for each gig. He uses either a Yamaha or Pearl drum kit, both known for their high-quality construction and excellent sound. Lara’s cymbals and hi-hats are from Zildjian, a well-known brand in the world of percussion. Zildjian cymbals are renowned for their bright and clear sound. Lara’s drumsticks are from Vic Firth, a popular choice among drummers.

Overall, the musical equipment used by the band members is crucial in creating their unique sound and style. From Don Ortiz’s iconic Fender Stratocaster guitar and Roland synthesizer to Kenny Skaggs’ smooth and expressive pedal steel guitar and Henry Lara’s versatile drum kit, each piece of equipment plays an important role.

As a musician, it’s essential to experiment with different instruments and gear to find what works best for you. Consider trying out different brands, models, and effects pedals to discover new sounds and textures. Don’t be afraid to step out of your comfort zone and try something new. With the right musical equipment, you can elevate your performances to the next level and create music that resonates with your audience.
